75 Years Under the Sun: GALE Pacific Reflects on its Legacy While Designing What Comes Next

Published 17 February 2026

Melbourne, Australia — February 13, 2026 — For 75 years, GALE Pacific Limited (ASX: GAP) has designed fabrics for life to thrive under for some of the world’s harshest environments. Founded in Australia in 1951, the company established its reputation by solving a simple yet persistent problem: how to protect people, places, and the planet from the effects of intensifying heat and UV. As GALE Pacific marks its 75th anniversary, the milestone isn’t just about honouring our heritage; it’s a look forward to what’s next, including unveiling a fresh brand identity and a future focused on innovation and sustainability.

A Journey of Firsts

GALE Pacific has a legacy of setting benchmarks in technical textiles.

  • In the 1970s, it invented the world’s first knitted shade fabric using advanced polymer technology, transforming outdoor living.

  • In the 1980s, it introduced fashion colours into shade fabrics, combining aesthetics with function.

  • In 1991, it launched Commercial NinetyFive®, now the industry's cornerstone for architectural shade structures. With up to 96% UV block, OEKO-TEX® and GREENGUARD® certifications, and global flame-retardant compliance, it remains the trusted choice for schools, councils, and commercial projects worldwide.

  • From 2016 to the present, GALE Pacific pioneered closed-loop recycling for agricultural tarpaulins, collecting retired PP/PE grain covers, converting them into prime-grade resin, and manufacturing new Landmark® fabrics with recycled content. This program eliminates landfill and creates a scalable model for technical textile recycling across industries.

  • The company also developed Ecobanner®, Australia’s first PVC-free banner fabric offering a 100% closed-loop recycling solution for outdoor advertising.

Trusted Globally, Applied Locally

Today, GALE Pacific is a global innovator behind two specialist brands that protect consumer and commercial environments worldwide. GALE Commercial supplies advanced fabrics for major architectural, infrastructure, and agricultural projects across Australia, the United States, the Middle East, and other demanding markets—covering shade structures, schools, public spaces, crop protection, and water management.

Designed to protect the moments that matter, GALE Pacific’s Coolaroo brand brings the same sun protection and outdoor comfort to households, with products such as shade sails, blinds, and umbrellas sold through leading retailers in Australia and North America.

Designing for a Hotter, Harsher World

“As GALE Pacific celebrates 75 years, this milestone represents more than longevity: it is a reaffirmation of the company’s purpose,” said Troy Mortleman, Chief Executive Officer of GALE Pacific. “GALE Pacific’s heritage is built on solving real-world challenges with technical fabrics that perform where it matters most. Today, that means designing solutions for a hotter, harsher world while leading the way in sustainability and innovation.”

What’s Next for GALE Pacific

GALE Pacific’s innovations play a critical role in making shade a fundamental part of outdoor life, helping protect people, animals, crops, and shared spaces from the sun’s harsh effects. With rising heat and UV exposure placing more pressure on communities worldwide, the company remains focused on advancing intelligent, accessible shade solutions that support wellbeing, safety, and long-term resilience. Through fabrics endorsed by Cancer Council Australia for their contribution to sun safety, and proprietary developments, such as Coolaroo Heatshield® for cooler-touch surfaces, the company continues to invest in technologies that enable communities to thrive, combining durability, performance, and sustainability. As climate pressures intensify, GALE Pacific remains committed to advancing fabrics for a warming world.
